최동주 연구소장, 한수진 연구실장, 이수호 연구원이 공저자로 참여한 책 <South Korea’s Engagement with Africa>가 세계적인 출판사 ‘팔그레이브 맥밀란(Palgrave Macmillan, London, UK)’를 통해 출간되었다. 팔그레이브 맥밀란은 170년이 넘는 전통과 전문성을 바탕으로 세계적인 학자들의 저서를 출판하고 있다.
이번에 발표한 책은 장용규 교수(한국외대)가 편집하였고, 이진상 (한국뉴욕주립대), 김은경 교수 (한국외대), 김수원 박사(웨스턴 케이프 대학교), 육숙희 박사과정생 (한국외대) 등이 공동저자로 참여하였다.
이 책은 한국과 아프리카의 관계가 학술, 경제, 외교 등 다양한 분야에서 어떻게 형성되어 왔는지를 분석한 최초의 학술적 시도로서 큰 의의를 가진다. 저자들은 비록 한-아프리카 관계가 비교적 짧은 역사를 갖고 있으나, 탈식민화 이후 발전을 위한 서로의 노력 속에서 시작되었고 상호 협력을 통한 기회를 만들어 내면서 성장해왔다고 강조한다.
우리 연구소 연구진은 제 3장 “South Korean Social Science Research on Africa”을 맡았다. 사회과학 분야에서 한국 연구자들의 아프리카 연구 트렌드를 분석한 첫 시도였다. 한국에서 아프리카에 관한 첫 번째 논문이 발표된 1955년부터 2018년까지 사회과학 분야를 중심으로 한국에서의 아프리카 연구의 주제가 시기별로 변화한 추이와 그 사회·경제적 배경을 분석하였다. 연구방법으로는 서지정보를 분석하는 방법 중 하나인 클러스터 맵 분석을 활용하였다.

Since its advent in the 1950s, South Korean social science research on Africa has grown immensely in scope and scale. As both international and domestic political and economic environments evolved over time, research too adapted to meet the demands of the time. Beginning with research focused on diplomacy and political factors within the context of the Cold War and diplomatic competition with North Korea, South Korea's researchers transitioned to increasing their focus on economic factors in Africa as South Korea's economy grew and Africa became an attractive choice for foreign market entry. Finally, following South Korea's admission to the OECD DAC in 2010, researchers have increasingly focused on ODA and how aid can be effectively utilized in Africa. This study used bibliometric analysis to analyze common keywords in research sources from the 1950s-60s, 1970s-80s, and 1990s-2010s. The results of this analysis led to the development of cluster maps, in which terms were grouped by frequency of occurrence and their relationship to one another. An examination of these clusters can easily depict the major research trends in South Korea according to era, thereby showing the evolution of research over time as well as providing a basis for the direction of future research on Africa.
